Loki Episode 4 Review: A Sinister New Foe Tests the God of Mischief
The fourth episode of Loki’s thrilling second season brings high stakes and a menacing new enemy for Tom Hiddleston‘s quick-witted Asgardian. Titled “The Variant,” this instalment transports Loki and Mobius to 19th-century England to stop a new timeline-shattering threat. Here they encounter the mysterious vampire hunter Cain Marko, played to perfection by David Harbour.
Though Cain offers to join forces against the greater danger, it soon becomes apparent he harbors his own villainous motivations. Where Loki relies on sorcery and cleverness, Cain employs sheer physical might augmented by a supernatural red ring granting immense power. But Cain also engages Loki in an intellectual battle of philosophies, outmaneuvering the trickster through ruthless cunning.
Comic book fans will recognize Cain as the iconic X-Men supervillain Juggernaut. His introduction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe builds him up as potentially an even greater adversary than Thanos. While not pursuing galactic conquest, Cain’s intimate quest for control and vengeance could prove no less catastrophic.
